Estradiol acetylsalicylate

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Estradiol Acetylsalicylate is a pharmaceutical drug that combines estradiol, a form of estrogen, and acetylsalicylic acid, also known as aspirin. This combination is used in the treatment of various medical conditions related to hormone imbalance and inflammation.

Composition

Estradiol Acetylsalicylate is composed of two active ingredients:

  • Estradiol: A form of estrogen, a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries. Estradiol is responsible for the development and maintenance of female characteristics in the human body. It is used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and in hormonal contraception.
  • Acetylsalicylic acid: Commonly known as aspirin, it is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation. It also has an antiplatelet effect by inhibiting the production of thromboxane, which under normal circumstances binds platelet molecules together to create a patch over damaged walls of the blood vessels.

Uses

Estradiol Acetylsalicylate is used in the treatment of various medical conditions including:

  • Menopause: The estradiol component helps to alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation.
  • Inflammation and Pain: The acetylsalicylic acid component is used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Estradiol Acetylsalicylate can cause side effects. Some common side effects include nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, headache, weight changes, and breast tenderness. More serious side effects can include increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and certain types of cancer.
