Erythrina variegata
Erythrina variegata, commonly known as the Indian coral tree, is a species of flowering plant in the pea family, Fabaceae. It is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.
Description[edit]
Erythrina variegata is a medium-sized deciduous tree that can grow up to 15–20 meters in height. The tree is known for its striking red and orange flowers, which bloom in dense clusters. The leaves are trifoliate, with each leaflet being ovate to elliptic in shape.
The bark of the tree is smooth and gray, while the trunk is often spiny. The seeds are black and bean-like, contained within a pod that splits open when mature.
Distribution and habitat[edit]
Erythrina variegata is found in a variety of habitats, including coastal areas, forests, and savannas. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions for its ornamental value and as a shade tree.
Uses[edit]

The tree is valued for its timber, which is used in carpentry and woodworking. The flowers are sometimes used in traditional medicine and as a source of dye.
In agriculture, Erythrina variegata is often used as a living fence and as a support for vine crops. The tree is also planted for soil improvement due to its ability to fix nitrogen.
Cultural significance[edit]
In many cultures, Erythrina variegata holds symbolic significance. It is often associated with fertility and prosperity.
