Endothelin receptor type B

Endothelin receptor type B (ET_B) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EDNRB gene. It is one of two main types of endothelin receptors, the other being endothelin receptor type A (ET_A).

Function

ET_B receptors are found in high concentrations in the lung, kidney, skin, heart, and brain. They play a crucial role in maintaining vascular homeostasis by mediating the effects of endothelin-1, a potent vasoconstrictor and pro-inflammatory peptide.

Structure

The ET_B receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor that spans the cell membrane seven times. It is part of the rhodopsin-like receptors family.

Clinical significance

Mutations in the EDNRB gene have been associated with Hirschsprung's disease, a congenital disorder characterized by the absence of neural crest cells in the colon, leading to severe constipation and intestinal obstruction.
