Elevator (medical)
Elevator (pronounced: /ˈelɪveɪtər/) is a surgical instrument used in many surgical procedures. It is primarily used to lift or separate tissues during surgery. The term "elevator" is derived from the Latin word "elevare" which means "to lift up".
Types of Elevators
There are several types of elevators used in different surgical procedures. Some of the most common types include:
- Periosteal Elevator: This type of elevator is used to separate the periosteum (the dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the surfaces of the joints) from the underlying bone.
- Dental Elevator: Dental elevators are used in dental procedures to loosen and elevate teeth in the socket.
- Nasal Elevator: Nasal elevators are used in rhinoplasty and other nasal surgeries to separate nasal tissues.
