Elements

Elements (pronunciation: /ˈɛlɪmənts/), from the Latin word elementum meaning 'principle', 'rudiment', are the simplest form of matter that cannot be broken down using any chemical means. They are the fundamental substances of matter and are organized in the Periodic Table according to their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties.

Definition

An element is a substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons. This number of protons is the atomic number, and it uniquely identifies an element. Elements are classified into metals, non-metals, and metalloids based on their properties.

Classification

Elements are classified into three main types:

  • Metals: These are elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity. They are malleable and ductile. Examples include Iron, Copper, and Aluminium.
  • Non-metals: These are elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity. They are not malleable or ductile. Examples include Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Carbon.

Related Terms

  • Atom: The smallest unit of an element that retains the properties of that element.
  • Molecule: A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
  • Compound: A substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together.
  • Chemical reaction: A process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances to another.
  • Periodic Table: A tabular arrangement of chemical elements, organized based on their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties.
