Ed Rendell
Edward Gene Rendell (born January 5, 1944) is an American lawyer, politician, and author. He served as the 45th Governor of Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2011. Prior to his governorship, Rendell was the Mayor of Philadelphia from 1992 to 2000 and the District Attorney of Philadelphia from 1978 to 1986.
Early life and education[edit]
Rendell was born in New York City to Jewish parents. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then went on to receive a Juris Doctor from the Villanova University School of Law.
Political career[edit]
District Attorney of Philadelphia[edit]
Rendell served as the District Attorney of Philadelphia from 1978 to 1986. During his tenure, he was known for his tough stance on crime and efforts to improve the efficiency of the district attorney's office.
Mayor of Philadelphia[edit]
In 1991, Rendell was elected Mayor of Philadelphia. He served two terms from 1992 to 2000. As mayor, he was credited with revitalizing the city's economy and improving its fiscal health.
Governor of Pennsylvania[edit]
Rendell was elected Governor of Pennsylvania in 2002 and served two terms from 2003 to 2011. His administration focused on education reform, economic development, and infrastructure improvement.
Post-political career[edit]
After leaving office, Rendell has been active as a political commentator and author. He has also served on various boards and engaged in public speaking.
Personal life[edit]
Rendell was married to Midge Rendell, a federal judge, from 1971 until their separation in 2011. They have one son, Jesse.
