Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by Earth Day Network involving 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
History
The first Earth Day was proposed by peace activist John McConnell at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco in 1969. The event was later established by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his work.
Significance
Earth Day is significant as it marks the birth of the modern environmental movement. The event led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
