E number (pronounced /ˈiː ˈnʌmbər/) is a system of codes for food additives that are used within the European Union and EFTA (except Norway). The "E" stands for "Europe" or "European Union". The system was introduced in the 1960s by the EU and has been adopted by other countries around the world.
