ESKAPE

ESKAPE (/ɛskeɪp/) is an acronym used in microbiology to refer to a group of bacteria with a high level of antibiotic resistance. The term was first coined in 2008 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). The acronym stands for Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species.

Etymology

The term ESKAPE is an acronym derived from the initial letters of the six bacteria it represents. The term was chosen to highlight the ability of these bacteria to "escape" the effects of antibiotics.
