E-mentoring (pronounced /iːˈmɛntərɪŋ/), also known as electronic mentoring, is a type of Mentoring that uses electronic communication to facilitate the mentor-mentee relationship.

Etymology

The term "E-mentoring" is a compound word derived from the prefix "e-" (a shortened form of "electronic") and the word "mentoring". The prefix "e-" is commonly used to denote activities or processes that are conducted over the internet or electronically, such as in "e-mail" or "e-commerce". The word "mentoring" comes from the Greek "Mentor", a character in Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, who was a trusted advisor to the young Telemachus.

Definition

E-mentoring is a process where a more experienced or knowledgeable person (the mentor) provides guidance, support, and feedback to a less experienced or knowledgeable person (the mentee) through online platforms. This can include email, video conferencing, social media, and other digital communication tools.

Benefits and Challenges

E-mentoring offers several benefits, including flexibility in scheduling, the ability to connect with mentors regardless of geographic location, and the potential for anonymity, which can reduce the impact of biases. However, it also presents challenges, such as the potential for miscommunication due to the lack of non-verbal cues, and the need for both mentors and mentees to be comfortable with technology.
