Dust Mite Allergy

Dust mite allergy (pronunciation: /dʌst maɪt ˈælərdʒi/) is a hypersensitivity reaction to proteins found in the excrement of dust mites.

Etymology

The term "dust mite allergy" is derived from the English words "dust", "mite", and "allergy". "Dust" is from Old English "dust", meaning "dust, dirt, or earth". "Mite" is from Middle English "mite", meaning "small insect or spider". "Allergy" is from the German "allergie", coined by Clemens von Pirquet in 1906, from Greek "allos" (other) and "ergon" (activity).

Definition

A Dust mite allergy is an allergic reaction to tiny bugs that commonly live in house dust. Signs of dust mite allergy include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and runny nose. Many people with dust mite allergy also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a dust mite allergy can range from mild to severe and can include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Red, itchy or teary eyes
  • Wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath
  • Itching

Causes

Dust mites eat skin cells shed by people, and they thrive in warm, humid environments. In most homes, such items as bedding, upholstered furniture and carpeting provide an ideal environment for dust mites.

Diagnosis

A diagnosis of dust mite allergy is often suspected based on the symptoms and the physical examination. The diagnosis can be confirmed by a skin prick test or a blood test.

Treatment

Treatment of dust mite allergy includes over-the-counter or prescription medications to control symptoms. The most effective treatment strategy for dust mite allergy is to avoid exposure to dust mites as much as possible.
