Doctor Mid-Nite is a fictional character and superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Charles Reizenstein and artist Stan Aschmeier, and first appeared in All-American Comics #25 in April 1941. There have been three different characters who have taken up the mantle of Doctor Mid-Nite: Charles McNider, Beth Chapel, and Pieter Cross.

Publication history

Doctor Mid-Nite first appeared in All-American Comics #25 in 1941. The character was one of the first to have a disability as a defining trait, being blind but able to see in the dark. Over the years, Doctor Mid-Nite has been a member of various superhero teams, including the Justice Society of America and the All-Star Squadron.

Fictional character biography

Charles McNider

The original Doctor Mid-Nite, Charles McNider, was a surgeon who was blinded by a grenade blast during a mob hit. He discovered that he could see in the dark and decided to fight crime as Doctor Mid-Nite. He used special infrared goggles to see in the light and employed "blackout bombs" to create areas of darkness.

Beth Chapel

Beth Chapel was a physician who took up the mantle of Doctor Mid-Nite after Charles McNider. She was a member of Infinity, Inc. and the Justice Society of America. Like McNider, she was also blind but could see in the dark.

Pieter Cross

The most recent Doctor Mid-Nite, Pieter Cross, is a Norwegian physician who was blinded in a car accident. He discovered that he could see in the dark and took up the mantle of Doctor Mid-Nite. He is a member of the Justice Society of America and Checkmate.
