Detlev Ganten

Detlev Ganten is a renowned pharmacologist and medical scientist from Germany. He is best known for his significant contributions to the field of hypertension research and his role in the establishment of the World Health Summit.

Early Life and Education

Detlev Ganten was born in Marburg, Germany, in 1941. He studied medicine at the University of Würzburg and the University of Montpellier. He completed his doctorate in 1968 at the University of Würzburg.

Career

After completing his doctorate, Ganten moved to the United States where he worked at the University of Michigan and the University of Heidelberg. His research primarily focused on the renin-angiotensin system and its role in hypertension.

In 1975, Ganten returned to Germany and became the director of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine. He held this position until 2004. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the development of transgenic rats, which are now widely used in hypertension research.

In 2008, Ganten founded the World Health Summit, an international conference that brings together leaders from academia, politics, civil society, and the private sector to discuss global health issues.

Honors and Awards

Ganten has received numerous awards for his contributions to medicine and science, including the Prince Mahidol Award in 2012 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2015.
