Denture

A Denture (/ˈdɛntʃər/), also known as false teeth, is a prosthetic device constructed to replace missing teeth, which are supported by the surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity.

Etymology

The term "Denture" comes from the Latin word "dens" or "dent-" meaning "tooth", with the suffix "-ure" denoting the result of action.

Types of Dentures

There are two main types of dentures: Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate". A Conventional Denture is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed. On the other hand, an Immediate Denture is made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.

Partial Dentures

A Partial Denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is sometimes connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth.
