Deconditioning

Deconditioning (/diːkənˈdɪʃənɪŋ/) is a complex process of physiological change following a period of inactivity, bedrest or sedentary lifestyle. It results in functional loss of muscle strength, endurance and overall decrease in physiological and psychological performance.

Etymology

The term "deconditioning" is derived from the prefix "de-", meaning "reverse of", and "conditioning", which in this context refers to the process of training or accustoming a person or animal to behave in a certain way or to accept certain circumstances.
