Dauphin County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 286,401. The county seat and largest city is Harrisburg, which is also the state capital of Pennsylvania. The county was created on March 4, 1785, from part of Lancaster County and named for the Dauphin of France, the heir apparent to the French throne.
Geography
Dauphin County is situated in the central part of Pennsylvania. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 558 square miles, of which 525 square miles is land and 33 square miles is water. The Susquehanna River runs through the county, providing a significant waterway for transportation and recreation.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 286,401 people, 120,406 households, and 72,861 families residing in the county. The population density was 545 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 68.1% White, 18.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
Government and politics
Dauphin County is governed by a board of three commissioners. The county is part of the 10th Congressional District and the 11th Congressional District.
Education
Dauphin County is home to several institutions of higher education, including Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Penn State Harrisburg, and the Harrisburg Area Community College.
Transportation
The county is served by several major highways, including Interstate 81, Interstate 83, and U.S. Route 322. The Harrisburg International Airport provides air service to the region.
