Data processing (pronounced: /ˈdeɪtə ˈprɒsesɪŋ/) is a series of operations that use information to produce a result. Common methods of data processing include batch processing, real-time processing, online processing, and distributed processing.

Etymology

The term "data processing" comes from the process of transforming raw data into a meaningful output. The word "data" is derived from the Latin word "datum", meaning "something given", while "processing" comes from the Latin word "processus", meaning "a going forward, advance, progress".
