Data Privacy (pronunciation: /ˈdeɪtə ˈprɪvəsi/), also known as Information Privacy, is a branch of Information Technology that deals with the proper handling, processing, storage, and disposal of data with respect to its confidentiality and privacy.

Etymology

The term "Data Privacy" is derived from the Latin word "datum" meaning "something given" and the English word "privacy" which originates from the Latin word "privatus" meaning "private". The term collectively refers to the protection of private information given or shared in a digital format.

Data Privacy refers to the practices and policies in place to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of data in the digital and electronic sphere. It involves the implementation of measures to prevent unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, inspection, recording or destruction of information.
