Dalfampridine

Dalfampridine (pronounced dal-FAM-pri-deen), also known as 4-aminopyridine, is a medication used to improve walking in adults with certain types of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Etymology

The name "Dalfampridine" is derived from its chemical structure, which is a derivative of the organic compound pyridine. The prefix "Dal-" is an abbreviation of "diaminopyridine", indicating the presence of two amino groups in the pyridine ring.

Usage

Dalfampridine is an oral medication that works by blocking potassium channels on the surface of nerve fibers. This action can improve the conduction of nerve impulses in damaged nerves, potentially improving muscle strength and coordination.

Side Effects

Like all medications, dalfampridine can cause side effects. The most common include urinary tract infection, insomnia, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, back pain, problems with balance, multiple sclerosis relapse, burning or prickling sensation in the skin, constipation, indigestion, and throat pain.

Precautions

Before taking dalfampridine, patients should inform their healthcare provider about any other medications they are taking, as well as any medical conditions they have. Dalfampridine should not be used by people with a history of seizures or kidney disease.
