Dairy Farmers of America

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) is a national milk marketing cooperative in the United States. It is one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the country, representing thousands of dairy farmers and providing a wide range of dairy products to consumers.

History

Dairy Farmers of America was formed in 1998 through the merger of four dairy cooperatives: Mid-America Dairymen, Milk Marketing, Inc., Western Dairymen Cooperative, Inc., and Southeast Milk, Inc.. The merger aimed to create a more efficient and competitive organization to support dairy farmers and meet the growing demand for dairy products.

Structure and Operations

DFA is structured as a cooperative, meaning it is owned and controlled by its member dairy farmers. The cooperative operates across several regions in the United States, including the Central, Mideast, Mountain, Northeast, Southeast, and Western areas. Each region has its own governance structure, with elected representatives who participate in the overall governance of DFA.

DFA's operations include milk marketing, manufacturing, and distribution. The cooperative markets raw milk to processors and also produces a variety of dairy products, including cheese, butter, yogurt, milk powder, and fluid milk. DFA's products are sold under various brand names and private labels.

Products and Brands

DFA produces and markets a wide range of dairy products. Some of the well-known brands associated with DFA include:

Sustainability and Community Involvement

DFA is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The cooperative implements various initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint, including water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste reduction programs. DFA also supports its member farmers in adopting sustainable farming practices.

In addition to its environmental efforts, DFA is actively involved in community support and charitable activities. The cooperative provides financial assistance and resources to dairy farmers in need and supports various community programs and organizations.
