Cytochrome c reductase (pronunciation: /ˌsaɪtoʊˈkroʊm siː rɪˈdʌkˌteɪz/) is an important enzyme involved in the Electron transport chain of the Mitochondria.

Etymology

The term "Cytochrome" is derived from the Greek words "kytos" meaning "cell" and "chroma" meaning "color". This is due to the colorful nature of the compounds when observed in solution. The "c" in Cytochrome c reductase refers to the specific type of cytochrome it is. "Reductase" is a term used in biochemistry to denote enzymes that catalyze a reduction reaction, in this case, the reduction of Cytochrome c.

Function

Cytochrome c reductase, also known as Cytochrome bc1 complex or Complex III, is a protein complex that plays a crucial role in the Mitochondrial respiratory chain. It catalyzes the transfer of electrons from Ubiquinol to Cytochrome c, contributing to the generation of a proton gradient across the Mitochondrial membrane. This proton gradient is subsequently used for the synthesis of ATP, the main energy currency of the cell.
