Cydonia oblonga

Cydonia oblonga (pronunciation: /sɪˈdoʊniə ɒbˈlɒŋɡə/), commonly known as the quince, is a deciduous tree that originates from Asia Minor and is now found across the globe in temperate regions. The tree produces a pome fruit, also known as the quince, which is bright golden-yellow when mature.

Etymology

The name Cydonia oblonga is derived from the ancient city of Cydonia on the island of Crete, Greece. The term 'oblonga' refers to the oblong shape of the fruit. The common name 'quince' comes from the Latin word 'quintus', meaning fifth, as it was traditionally the fifth fruit to ripen.

Description

The Cydonia oblonga tree can grow up to 5-8 meters in height. The leaves are alternately arranged, simple, 6–11 cm long, with an entire margin and densely pubescent with fine white hairs. The flowers, produced in spring after the leaves, are white or pink, 5 cm across, with five petals.

The fruit is a pome with a strong aroma and its size ranges from 7 to 12 cm. It is initially pale yellow-green, becoming bright golden-yellow when mature. The fruit is hard and astringent, though it becomes soft and aromatic if bletted.

Cultivation and Uses

Cydonia oblonga is cultivated for its fruit, which is used in cooking for its unique flavor and aroma. The fruit is also used in traditional medicine, particularly in the treatment of digestive disorders. The tree is also grown for its ornamental value, with its attractive blossoms and foliage.
