Cyborg Foundation
The Cyborg Foundation is an international organization that aims to help humans become cyborgs, defend cyborg rights, and promote cyborg art and culture. It was founded in 2010 by Neil Harbisson and Moon Ribas in Barcelona, Spain.
History
The Cyborg Foundation was established in response to the growing interest in human enhancement and the integration of technology with the human body. Neil Harbisson, who is recognized as the world's first legally recognized cyborg, co-founded the organization after receiving an antenna implant that allows him to perceive colors beyond the human visual spectrum.
Mission
The mission of the Cyborg Foundation is threefold:
1. Assist humans in becoming cyborgs: The foundation provides support and resources for individuals interested in augmenting their bodies with cybernetic devices. 2. Defend cyborg rights: The foundation advocates for the rights of individuals who choose to enhance their bodies with technology, ensuring they are recognized and protected under the law. 3. Promote cyborg art and culture: The foundation encourages the exploration of new forms of art and culture that emerge from the fusion of technology and the human body.
Activities
The Cyborg Foundation engages in various activities to fulfill its mission:
- Workshops and Conferences: The foundation organizes events to educate the public about cyborgism and the potential of human enhancement technologies. - Research and Development: The foundation collaborates with scientists and technologists to develop new cybernetic devices and applications. - Advocacy: The foundation works to raise awareness about cyborg rights and the ethical implications of human enhancement.
Notable Projects
One of the foundation's notable projects is the development of the "eyeborg," a device that allows individuals to perceive colors through sound waves. This project was inspired by Neil Harbisson's own experience with his antenna implant.
