Structure

Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, including osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), myocytes (muscle cells) and adipocytes (fat cells). Epithelial stem cells, on the other hand, have the ability to differentiate into cells of the epidermis, glandular epithelium, and mucosal epithelium.

Clinical significance

The cord lining is a rich source of stem cells, which can be harvested and stored for future use in regenerative medicine and cell therapy. These cells have the potential to treat a variety of diseases and conditions, including leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia, and immunodeficiency disorders.
