Control System

A Control System (pronunciation: /kənˈtrəʊl ˈsɪstəm/) is a device, or set of devices, that manages, commands, directs or regulates the behavior of other devices or systems. Industrial control systems are used in industrial production for controlling equipment or machines.

Etymology

The term "Control System" is derived from the English words "control" and "system". The word "control" comes from the Middle English "controllen", which means "to check or regulate", and "system" comes from the Late Latin "systema", which means "an organized whole".

Types of Control Systems

There are two main types of control systems: open-loop control systems and closed-loop control systems.

  • Open-loop control system: This is a type of control system in which the output is not influenced by the control action. It is also known as a non-feedback system.
  • Closed-loop control system: This is a type of control system in which the control action is somehow dependent on the output. It is also known as a feedback control system.

Related Terms

  • Feedback: This is a process in which information about the past or the present influences the same phenomenon in the present or future. In a control system, it helps the system to automatically adjust its operation, depending on the output.
  • Control theory: This is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and mathematics that deals with the behavior of dynamical systems with inputs. The external input of a system is called the reference.
  • System dynamics: This is an approach to understanding the nonlinear behaviour of complex systems over time using stocks, flows, internal feedback loops, and time delays.
