Automation

Automation (pronounced: /ɔːtəˈmeɪʃən/) is the technology by which a process or procedure is performed with minimal human assistance. The term automation, coined in 1946 by General Motors' Delmar S. Harder, is derived from the Latin word automatus, meaning "self-acting".

Overview

Automation or automatic control is the use of various control systems for operating equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat treating ovens, switching on telephone networks, steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft and other applications and vehicles with minimal or reduced human intervention.

History

The history of automation dates back to the industrial revolution when machinery began to replace manual labor. The first recorded use of automation was in the manufacturing industry where machines were used to automate repetitive tasks.

Types of Automation

There are several types of automation, including:

  • Industrial Automation: This involves the use of control systems and information technologies to reduce the need for human work in the production of goods and services.
  • Home Automation: This involves the control and automation of lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and security, as well as home appliances.
  • Office Automation: This involves the varied computer machinery and software used to digitally create, collect, store, manipulate, and relay office information needed for accomplishing basic tasks.

Benefits and Risks

Automation has many benefits, including increased productivity, improved quality, reduced costs, and increased safety. However, it also has potential risks, such as job displacement and security vulnerabilities.
