Consumer Protection

Consumer protection (/kənˈsjuːmər prəˈtɛkʃən/) refers to the laws and methods implemented to ensure the rights of consumers are upheld and to prevent businesses from engaging in fraud or unfair practices.

Etymology

The term "consumer protection" originates from the combination of the words "consumer" and "protection". The word "consumer" comes from the Latin consumere which means "to use up or eat", while "protection" is derived from the Latin protegere meaning "to cover in front".

Related Terms

  • Consumer: An individual who purchases goods and services for personal use.
  • Consumer Rights: The legal entitlements given to consumers to protect them from unfair practices.
  • Consumer Law: The area of law that deals with issues related to consumer rights and protection.
  • Fraud: Deceptive practices intended to gain an unfair or dishonest advantage, often financial.
  • Unfair Trade Practices: Practices that are deceptive, misleading, or not in the best interest of the consumer.

Consumer Protection Laws

Consumer protection laws are designed to ensure fair trade competition and the free flow of truthful information in the marketplace. The laws are designed to prevent businesses that engage in fraud or specified unfair practices from gaining an advantage over competitors and may provide additional protection for the weak and those unable to take care of themselves.

Consumer Protection Agencies

Consumer protection is linked to the idea of Consumer Rights (that consumers have various rights as consumers), and to the formation of consumer organizations, which help consumers make better choices in the marketplace and get help with consumer complaints. Other types of consumer protection that are often provided by consumer organizations include education about what consumers should expect from suppliers and how to go about resolving problems.
