Computation is a process that follows a well-defined model understood and expressed as, for example, an algorithm, or a protocol. The study of computation is paramount to the discipline of computer science.

The term "computation" comes from the Latin computatio, which means a calculation or reckoning. It was first used in English in the 15th century.
