Communicating (pronunciation: /kəˈmjuːnɪkeɪtɪŋ/) is the act of conveying meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules.
Etymology
The term "communicating" originates from the Latin word "communicare", which means "to share".
Definition
Communicating is the process of sending and receiving messages through verbal or nonverbal means, including speech, or oral communication; writing and graphical representations (such as infographics, maps, and charts); and signs, signals, and behavior. It is also the mechanism we use to establish and modify relationships.
Types of Communication
There are four main types of communication: verbal, nonverbal, written and visual.
- Verbal communication involves sharing information between individuals by the use of speech.
- Nonverbal communication involves the use of visual cues such as body language, facial expressions and gestures.
- Written communication involves any type of interaction that makes use of the written word.
- Visual communication involves the use of visual elements, such as drawings, designs and illustrations, to convey ideas and information.
