AstraZeneca is a multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company. It was founded in 1999 through the merger of the Swedish Astra AB and the British Zeneca Group. The company's headquarters are located in Cambridge, United Kingdom. AstraZeneca operates in over 100 countries and its innovative medicines are used by millions of patients worldwide.

Astra AB was a Swedish pharmaceutical company founded in 1913. Zeneca Group was a British pharmaceutical company that was spun off from Imperial Chemical Industries in 1993. The two companies merged in 1999 to form AstraZeneca.

Products and Services[edit]

AstraZeneca develops, manufactures, and sells pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products. It is involved in the discovery, development, manufacturing, and marketing of prescription medicines, primarily for the treatment of diseases in various therapeutic areas, including oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolism, and respiratory and immunology.

Research and Development[edit]

AstraZeneca has a robust Research and Development (R&D) department that focuses on the discovery and development of new medicines. The company's R&D activities are primarily conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Sweden.

COVID-19 Vaccine[edit]

In 2020, AstraZeneca, in collaboration with the University of Oxford, developed a COVID-19 vaccine known as AZD1222 or Vaxzevria. The vaccine has been approved for emergency use in various countries to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
