The College of the Holy Cross is a private Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1843, it is the oldest Catholic college in New England and one of the oldest in the United States. The college is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and the Patriot League.
History
The College of the Holy Cross was founded by Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick, S.J., the second Bishop of Boston, in 1843. The college was established to provide a Catholic education to the sons of Irish immigrants. The first class consisted of six students and one faculty member. Over the years, the college has grown significantly and now enrolls approximately 3,100 students.
Academics
Holy Cross offers a rigorous liberal arts curriculum with a strong emphasis on Jesuit values. The college offers 33 majors in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Students are encouraged to engage in undergraduate research, study abroad programs, and community service.
