History

Colgate-Palmolive traces its origins to the early 19th century. The company was founded by William Colgate in 1806 as a starch, soap, and candle business in New York City. In 1928, Colgate merged with the Palmolive-Peet Company, which was founded by B.J. Johnson in 1898. The Palmolive brand was so named because the soap was made of palm and olive oils.
