Climbing

Climbing (/ˈklaɪmɪŋ/) is a sport or activity where participants ascend or traverse natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a pre-defined route without falling.

Etymology

The term "climbing" comes from the Old English word "climban," which means "to ascend or descend by clinging or grasping."

Types of Climbing

There are several types of climbing, each with its own unique characteristics and challenges. These include:

  • Bouldering: A form of climbing that is performed on small rock formations or artificial rock walls, known as boulders, without the use of ropes or harnesses.
  • Sport Climbing: A form of climbing that relies on permanent anchors fixed to the rock for protection, where climbers ascend a rock face using only their hands, feet, and physical strength.
  • Traditional Climbing (or Trad Climbing): A style of climbing where climbers place all gear required to protect against falls, and remove it when a pitch is complete.
  • Ice Climbing: The activity of ascending inclined ice formations, usually in the form of waterfalls, frozen waterfalls, and cliffs and rock slabs covered with ice refrozen from flows of water.
  • Mountaineering: The sport, hobby or profession of walking, hiking, backpacking and climbing mountains.
