Mountaineering (pronunciation: /ˌmaʊntɪˈnɪərɪŋ/), also known as mountain climbing, is the sport, hobby or profession of hiking, skiing, and climbing mountains.
Etymology
The term "mountaineering" comes from the word "mountain" and the suffix "-eering", which is derived from the verb "engineer". The term was first used in the 19th century to describe the act of climbing mountains, especially in the Alps.
