Charlatan
Charlatan
Charlatan (pronunciation: /ˈʃɑːrlətən/) is a term used to describe a person who falsely claims to have special knowledge or skills, particularly in the field of medicine. The term is often used pejoratively to refer to individuals who exploit the trust of others for personal gain, often through fraudulent or unproven health treatments.
Etymology
The term "charlatan" is derived from the Italian word ciarlatano, a term that was used to describe a seller of medicines who might use storytelling, magic, and sleight of hand to gain the trust of their customers. This word, in turn, is thought to have been derived from the name of the town of Cerretano, Italy, where many such sellers were believed to have originated.
