Certification Body

A Certification Body (pronunciation: /sərˌtɪfɪˈkeɪʃən ˈbɒdi/), also known as a Certification Organization or Certification Authority, is an independent organization that assesses and certifies the compliance of products, services, systems, and professionals against recognized standards.

Etymology

The term "Certification Body" is derived from the English words "certification" and "body". "Certification" comes from the Latin word "certificare", which means "to make certain", and "body" in this context refers to an organized or corporate entity.

Function

A Certification Body conducts audits to ensure that the entity being certified meets the specific standards. These audits can be conducted on a variety of subjects, including Quality Management Systems, Environmental Management Systems, Information Security Management Systems, and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The Certification Body then issues a certificate to the entity, signifying its compliance with the specified standards.

Accreditation

Certification Bodies themselves are often accredited by an Accreditation Body, which ensures that the Certification Body operates according to international standards. This provides an additional level of confidence in the certificates issued by the Certification Body.

Related Terms

  • Accreditation: The process by which a Certification Body is recognized as competent to perform specific tasks.
  • Audit: An examination of an organization's processes and systems to ensure compliance with specified standards.
  • Standard: A document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines, or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their purpose.
  • Compliance: The state of meeting the requirements of a standard or regulation.
