Leipzig University (German: Universität Leipzig ) is a public research university located in Leipzig, Germany. Founded in 1409, it is one of the oldest universities in the world and the second-oldest university in Germany. The university has a long tradition of fostering academic excellence and has been a center of learning and research for over six centuries.

Leipzig University was established on December 2, 1409, by Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, and his brother William II, Margrave of Meissen. The founding was a result of a migration of German students from the University of Prague due to the Western Schism and the Decree of Kutná Hora. The university was initially modeled after the University of Prague and the University of Vienna.

Throughout its history, Leipzig University has been a hub for intellectual and cultural development. During the Reformation, it became a center for Protestant theology. The university has also been associated with many notable figures, including Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Friedrich Nietzsche.
