Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

Cardiothoracic anesthesiology (pronunciation: car-di-o-tho-rac-ic an-es-the-si-ol-o-gy) is a sub-specialty of anesthesiology that focuses on the perioperative care of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery and related invasive procedures.

Etymology

The term "cardiothoracic" is derived from the Greek words "kardia" meaning heart and "thorax" meaning chest. Anesthesiology is derived from the Greek word "anesis" meaning without sensation.

In order to become a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist, one must first complete a residency in anesthesiology, followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. The certification is provided by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) after successful completion of an examination.
