Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a short-term weight loss diet that has been popular for decades. It is a low-calorie diet that involves consuming large quantities of cabbage soup over a period of seven days. The diet is often used as a quick fix for weight loss, rather than a long-term solution.

History[edit]

The origins of the Cabbage Soup Diet are unclear, but it is believed to have emerged in the 1980s. It gained popularity through word of mouth and various printed materials. The diet is sometimes referred to by other names, such as the "Mayo Clinic Diet," although it is not officially endorsed by the Mayo Clinic.

Diet Plan[edit]

The Cabbage Soup Diet is structured around a seven-day meal plan. Each day allows for specific foods in addition to unlimited amounts of cabbage soup.

Day 1[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup and fruit (excluding bananas).

Day 2[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup and non-starchy vegetables. One baked potato with butter for dinner.

Day 3[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup, fruits, and vegetables (excluding bananas and potatoes).

Day 4[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup, up to eight bananas, and skim milk.

Day 5[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup, up to 20 ounces of beef, and up to six fresh tomatoes. At least 6-8 glasses of water.

Day 6[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup, beef, and vegetables (excluding potatoes).

Day 7[edit]

  • Unlimited cabbage soup, brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables.

Effectiveness[edit]

The Cabbage Soup Diet is known for its rapid weight loss results, often leading to a loss of several pounds within a week. However, much of the weight loss is likely due to water loss rather than fat loss. The diet is not considered nutritionally balanced and is not recommended for long-term use.

Criticism[edit]

The diet has been criticized for being overly restrictive and lacking in essential nutrients. Health professionals often caution against the Cabbage Soup Diet due to its potential for causing nutrient deficiencies and its unsustainable nature. The diet can also lead to feelings of deprivation and may result in binge eating once the diet is completed.
