CYP4F2 (pronounced as "S-Y-P-Four-F-Two") is a gene that encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids.
Etymology
The term CYP4F2 is derived from the classification system for the cytochrome P450 enzyme family. "CYP" stands for "CYtochrome P450", "4" indicates the family number, "F" is the subfamily, and "2" is the individual gene number.
Function
The CYP4F2 enzyme is involved in the metabolism of a variety of drugs and xenobiotics, as well as the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. It is also known to metabolize arachidonic acid to hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs).
