COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa (pronunciation: /koʊvɪd naɪnˈtiːn pændɪmɪk ɪn saʊθ ˈæfrɪkə/) refers to the ongoing viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in the country of South Africa.

Etymology

The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019," the year when the disease was first identified. The term "pandemic" comes from the Greek words "pan," meaning "all," and "demos," meaning "people."
