COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal

The COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal (pronunciation: /koʊvɪd naɪnˈtiːn pændɪmɪk ɪn nɪˈpɔːl/) is an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The first case in Nepal was confirmed on 23 January 2020 when a 31-year-old student, who had returned to Kathmandu from Wuhan, China, tested positive for the disease. It was the first recorded case of COVID-19 in Nepal.

Etymology

The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019". The disease is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, which is short for "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2". The pandemic refers to the global spread of the disease, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020.
