The COVID-19 pandemic in Japan (Japanese: 日本におけるCOVID-19パンデミック, pronounced: Nihon ni okeru COVID-19 pandemikku) is an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have reached Japan in January 2020.
Etymology
The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019". The disease is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, which stands for "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2".
History
The first case of COVID-19 in Japan was reported on 16 January 2020. The government has been criticized for its handling of the pandemic, including issues with the quarantine of the Diamond Princess cruise ship and its slow rollout of vaccinations.
