CD34

CD34 (pronounced: C-D-thirty-four) is a transmembrane protein that is encoded by the CD34 gene in humans. It is often used in the clinical laboratory as a cell marker to identify and isolate hematopoietic stem cells.

Etymology

The term "CD34" is derived from the cluster of differentiation nomenclature system. This system is used to classify and identify different types of cells, particularly immune cells. The number 34 was assigned to this particular protein when it was first identified and characterized.

Function

CD34 is a cell surface glycoprotein that functions as a cell-cell adhesion factor. It may also participate in the attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or to stromal cells. This function is thought to be important in enabling stem cells to remain in the bone marrow.

Clinical Significance

CD34 is clinically significant as it is often used as a marker for identifying hematopoietic stem cells. CD34 is also used in the diagnosis and classification of certain types of tumors, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors and soft tissue sarcomas.
