Bullying in Medicine

Bullying in medicine (pronunciation: /ˈbʊlɪɪŋ ɪn ˈmɛdɪsɪn/) is a form of workplace bullying that occurs in the field of healthcare. It involves repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more individuals (the targets) by one or more perpetrators in a medical context.

Etymology

The term "bullying" originates from the word "bully", which in the 1530s meant "sweetheart," applied to either sex, from the Dutch boel "lover, brother," probably a diminutive of Middle Dutch broeder "brother." The meaning deteriorated through the 17th century through "fine fellow", "blusterer," to "harasser of the weak". The term "medicine" originates from the Latin medicina, from ars medicina "the medical art".
