Brodmann area 25

Brodmann area 25 (BA25), also known as the subgenual area or subgenual cingulate, is a region of the cerebral cortex in the brain. It is located in the cingulate cortex, beneath the anterior cingulate cortex. The term "subgenual" (pronounced: sub-je-nu-al) is derived from the Latin words "sub" meaning under, and "genu" meaning knee, referring to its position beneath the genu of the corpus callosum.

BA25 is involved in various functions, including mood regulation, response to stress, and reward processing. It has been implicated in several psychiatric disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.

Structure

BA25 is a small cortical area, located in the medial aspect of the brain. It is part of the limbic system, a group of structures involved in emotion, memory, and behavior. BA25 is surrounded by other Brodmann areas, including BA24 anteriorly, BA32 dorsally, and BA33 ventrally.

Function

BA25 plays a crucial role in emotional regulation. It is particularly involved in the processing of negative emotions and the regulation of stress responses. It is also involved in reward processing, contributing to the experience of pleasure and motivation.

Clinical significance

Abnormalities in BA25 have been associated with several psychiatric disorders. In particular, hyperactivity of BA25 has been observed in patients with depression, and it is a target for deep brain stimulation in treatment-resistant depression. BA25 is also implicated in anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder.
