Breast International Group (BIG)

Breast International Group (pronunciation: /brɛst ˌɪntərˈnæʃənəl ɡruːp/), often abbreviated as BIG, is a non-profit organization for academic breast cancer research groups from around the world. The etymology of the term is straightforward, with "Breast" referring to the focus on breast cancer, "International" indicating the global scope of the organization, and "Group" signifying the collective nature of the entity.

History

Breast International Group was founded in 1999. The organization's primary aim is to facilitate breast cancer research internationally by stimulating cooperation between its member groups and other academic networks, and collaborating with, but working independently from, the pharmaceutical industry.

Mission

The mission of BIG is to facilitate and accelerate breast cancer research at an international level by providing a platform for collaboration and sharing of data and findings among its member groups and partners. This includes the design, implementation and analysis of clinical trials and other forms of research.

Membership

Membership in the Breast International Group is open to any group or institution with a demonstrated commitment to breast cancer research. This includes both clinical research groups and translational research groups.
