Boston University (pronounced /ˈbɒstən juːnɪˈvɜːrsɪti/) is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts. The university is nonsectarian but has been historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
Etymology
The name "Boston University" is derived from the institution's location in Boston, Massachusetts, and its status as a university. The term "university" comes from the Latin universitas, meaning "a whole".
History
Boston University was chartered in 1869 by Lee Claflin, Jacob Sleeper, and Isaac Rich, three successful Methodist businessmen. The university organized formal Centennial observances both in 1969 and 1989.

Boston University offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctorates, and medical, dental, business, and law degrees through 18 schools and colleges on two urban campuses. The main campus is situated along the Charles River in Boston's Fenway-Kenmore and Allston neighborhoods, while the Boston University Medical Campus is in Boston's South End neighborhood.
Notable Alumni
Boston University has many notable alumni, including Martin Luther King Jr., who received his PhD in Systematic Theology from the university in 1955.
