Bornholm is a Danish island located in the Baltic Sea, to the east of the rest of Denmark, south of Sweden, and north of Poland. Known for its unique geological features, rich history, and cultural heritage, Bornholm is a popular tourist destination.
Geography
Bornholm covers an area of 588 square kilometers and is characterized by its varied landscape, which includes rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, and lush forests. The island's highest point is Rytterknægten, which rises to 162 meters above sea level.
History
The island has a rich history, having been inhabited since the Stone Age. It has been a strategic location due to its position in the Baltic Sea. During the Middle Ages, Bornholm was a center of trade and was controlled by the Lübeck merchants of the Hanseatic League.
Hammershus Castle
One of the most notable historical sites on Bornholm is Hammershus, the largest medieval fortress in Northern Europe. Built in the 13th century, it served as a stronghold for the Danish crown and later for the Bishopric of Lund.
Economy
The economy of Bornholm is primarily based on tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The island is famous for its smoked herring, a local delicacy. In recent years, Bornholm has also become known for its arts and crafts, particularly ceramics and glassware.

Bornholm is a single municipality, known as Bornholm Municipality, which was formed in 2003 when the island's five municipalities were merged.
Major Towns
The largest town on Bornholm is Rønne, which serves as the administrative center of the island. Other notable towns include Nexø, Aakirkeby, and Allinge-Sandvig.
