Blush

Blush (/blʌʃ/), also known as flushing, is a spontaneous physical response characterized by the reddening of a person's face due to various emotional states such as embarrassment, anger, or romantic stimulation.

Etymology

The term "blush" originates from the Old English word "blȳscan" which means to become red or to glow.

Physiology

Blushing is a result of the autonomic nervous system's response to emotional stress. This response causes the blood vessels in the face to dilate, allowing more blood to flow through them and thus causing the face to turn red.

Related Terms

  • Erythema: A condition that causes the skin to turn red due to inflammation or infection.
  • Rosacea: A chronic skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in the face.
  • Emotion: A complex state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes that influence thought and behavior.
  • Stress: The body's method of reacting to a challenge or physical and psychological barrier.
